2021 BMW 4-Series: What We Know So Far. BMW on Tuesday introduced a redesigned 4-Series coupe. The new coupe reaches traders later this season as a 2021 version and with a beginning price of $46,595. That is to get a 430i version with a rear-wheel drive. Insert all-wheel drive, and you’re going to want to pay an extra $2,000.
Also available at launch will be an M440i using a standard all-wheel driveway along with a starting cost of $59,495. All amounts include destination charges.

2021 BMW 4-Series
BMW’s two-door 4-series distinguishes itself from the 3-series sedan with a controversial new design and a more elegant roofline. Mechanically, the 2 cars are almost identical.
They are powered by the same two powertrains: either a 255-hp turbocharged a 382-hp turbocharged inline-six.
While passenger distance is obviously arranged differently within the two-door 4-series, occupants are treated to the same basic interior design, layout, and features as from the four-door–and as fans of BMW’s latest interior structure, we are fine with that.
BMW says that the new 4-series will start rolling out this fall when it takes on additional premium two-door models such as the Audi A5, the Lexus RC, and the Mercedes-Benz C-class.
Fans of this fastback 4-series Gran Coupe sedan or the high heeled M4 (both reviewed separately) will be happy to know that those models will continue to be offered.
The 4-series eventually catches up to the 3-series for 2021 with a clean-sheet redesign and cooler outside styling. The 2021 4-series is scheduled to go on sale in October.

Pricing and Which One to Buy
However, we haven’t driven the new 4-series, but in our experience with the four-door 3-series models, the turbocharged inline-six from the M440i model will be the enthusiast’s choice, but the almost $13,000 cost premium will turn off some buyers.
That bump in price includes a load of further equipment; however, you want more reason to warrant the cost.
The M440i comes standard with an all-wheel driveway, for one thing, and it is also outfitted with unique M Sport 18-inch wheels with run-flat tires, the M Sport suspension and rear differential, a rear spoiler, a faux-leather wrapped dash, and much more. A convertible version can be offered but shifting to the soft-top body design adds nearly $8000 to the bottom cost.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The exact same two overachieving engines given in the 3-series will probably be available from the 4-series. Models designated 430i will probably be powered with a 255-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder.
An all-wheel-drive example of the 330i auto managed a lively 5.2-second zero-to-60-mph time in our test track; we anticipate similarly peppy performance from the 430i.
The M440i is powered by a silky-smooth turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six that gains help from a 48-volt hybrid method to produce 382-hp–good for a 3.8-second zero-to-60-mph period in the M340i.
Our brief drive of prototype 4-series models in Munich revealed a very sporty driving experience, courtesy of retuned suspension, a more-aggressive steering calibration, a wider rear track, along with a lower center of gravity.
We’re looking forward to track-testing that the 4-series after it is officially unveiled to determine how it stacks up against its main rivals, the Audi A5 and S5, the Mercedes C-class coupe, and the Infiniti Q60.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
The EPA has not released fuel economy estimates for the 2021 4-series lineup yet, but it should provide similar evaluations as the 3-series. We anticipate highway fuel economy somewhere in the mid-30-mpg range for the 430i and high 20s for its six-cylinder M440i.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Shoppers may not notice much difference between the cottages of the 4-series and the 3-series unless they’re in the rear seat.
The dash layout, interior materials, and primary controls seem to be identical to the four-door 3-series’, although we discovered that the lower roofline in the 4-series provides it a spacious feel.
Trunk space is less generous here than at the 3-series, particularly in the convertible version, which will likely give up a number of its cargo space to provide storage room for its power-folding fabric roof.
The 2021 4-series comes with the exact same standard 8.8-inch and optional 10.3-inch infotainment displays as the 3-series sedan.
Both screens run the latest version of BMW’s iDrive 7 infotainment applications, which pairs an intuitive interface using a console-mounted click wheel controller for easy use while driving; individuals who prefer to interact with the screen directly can do since both are touchscreens.
Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and in-dash navigation will all be standard. Simultaneously, a 12.3-inch digital judge display, onboard Wi-Fi, and a wireless charging pad will probably be optional extras.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
It being brand new, the 2021 4-series has not been crashing tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). BMW offers a host of driver-assistance features to as standard with more advanced features available as alternatives.
- Conventional automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection
- Conventional lane-departure warning together with lane-keeping assist
- Available adaptive cruise control with semi-autonomous driving mode
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
In contrast to rivals such as the Cadillac CT5 or the Genesis G70 that the BMW 4-series’ standard guarantee offerings are rather basic. BMW constitutes that with a three-year free maintenance plan, whereas the Caddy offers one free visit.
